Having an escape plan for your home, school, workplace, is
extremely important before, and during a fire. The National
Fire Protection Association and the National Association of
Fire Chiefs consider escape planning to be of such
importance, it has been the Fire Prevention theme four times
in ten years.
This fire safety presentation stresses the importance of
establishing a fire escape plan, teaching it to children,
and practicing the plan. This program requires a television
and video player and lasts approximately one hour including
lecture and video presentation.
The Columbus Division of Fire, Juvenile Firesetter Program
has been operational since January 1984. This program is
under the umbrella of the Fire Prevention Bureau and
coordinated by one-full time fire fighter educated to
conduct Juvenile Firesetter Programs.
Also, other fire fighters who are assigned to 48-hour duty
at various fire stations assist in the education of fire
safety. . The program uses the “Learn Not To Burn”
curriculum to promote juvenile fire safety and to assist in
arson prevention for youth who have a dangerous fascination
with fire and/or the tendency to set fires.
The program has been designed to receive referrals from
various organizations and the private and public sector. As
the program has grown, services have been expanded to
receive referrals from Franklin County Courts, Franklin
County Children Services, Mental Health Organizations,
Columbus Fire Arson Bureau, and other community agencies
with concentration in the Columbus Public Schools.
