The Training Bureau is under the
direction of Assistant Chief Greg Paxton. It is
organizationally divided into two areas of training with a total
Bureau staff of one Deputy Chief, One Battalion Chief, four Captains, one Lieutenant,
eleven Firefighters,
and two non-uniform staff, The Mission of the Training Bureau is to assure that
all members of the Division of Fire possess the necessary skills
and abilities to safely and effectively deal with any situation
they might encounter. This responsibility begins the day new
firefighters are hired and continues throughout their careers. The
Administrative Secretary for Chief Paxton is Geneva Bourne.

EMS Training
|

Captain
John Wilt
|
Emergency Medical Training
The Emergency Medical Training section is headed by
Captain John Wilt,. The EMS training staff includes Captain John Wilt, five permanently assigned firefighters,
four non-uniformed personnel, and one temporarily assigned Lieutenant who
manages the continuing medical education for paramedic personnel and the
Division CPR program. This
section provides medical training for all Division members leading to
State of Ohio certification as Emergency Medical Technician on either a
Basic or Paramedic level. They are also responsible for conducting
refresher courses and other continuing education courses. Medical Training
maintains all EMS run records, performs quality assurance reviews,
and answers requests for EMS run reports from police, attorneys, the
coroner's office, and citizens.

Battalion Chief
Robert Babb
|
Fire
Training
Battalion Chief Robert Babb
heads the Fire Training section. B/C Babb has a staff of 3 Captains and 1
Lieutenant. This section provides fire training for all 1,600 Division
members.

Captain
Stewart Atwood
|
Recruit Training
Captain Atwood heads the Recruit Training section. Capt.
Atwood has a staff of four permanently assigned
firefighters. During the 30 week recruit training period, three
lieutenants and several additional firefighters are transferred to this
section to assist in supervising and training the recruit firefighters.
The recruits are certified as a Firefighter II, EMT-Basic, Fire Safety
Inspector, and receive extensive
training on Divisional Operations. The Recruit Training staff graduated
one recruit class of 36 new firefighters in 2003. |

Captain
Shawn Koser
|
Apprenticeship Training
Captain Koser heads the
Apprenticeship Training section. Capt. Koser has a permanent staff of one Lieutenant and two
firefighters. The Apprenticeship Training section is responsible for all
aspects of the 36-month Apprenticeship Program, including test development, test
administration and all associated record keeping. In the year 2003 this
section certified 47 firefighters to receive a "Certificate of
Completion of Apprenticeship" from the United States Department of
Labor. |

Captain
Michael Vedra

Officer and Specialized Training
Captain Michael Vedra heads this
section, which is comprised of Officer Training, Manual Revision, and
Specialized training. Capt. Vedra is
assisted by one permanently assigned firefighter. This section uses many
temporarily assigned uniform personnel and/or outside instructors to facilitate
and/or present a wide variety of courses. This section
provides ongoing training that helps to keeps our personnel up to date on the most
current emergency response techniques, and enables them to respond safely
and knowledgeably to any emergency. |

Lieutenant
Doug Sanderson |
Rescue Training Lieutenant Doug Sanderson heads the Technical Rescue Section.
Lt. Sanderson is augmented with personnel from active fire/rescue companies
who help him present Basic Technical Rescue Training, Special
Operations Rescue Training and Continuing Education for Rescue Technicians,
all of which is based on NFPA 1670. In 2003, over 50 fire/rescue personnel
from the metropolitan Columbus area received training through the Columbus Fire
Division's Technical Rescue Program. |
